Water Variations

Fountains are wet infinity machines… Water gets pushed through imperfect pipes into an unstable world and emerges as a steady stream of never-ending change.

In this series of works, a small sample of the infinite phenomena is isolated, studied, and extrapolated, for to contemplate the universe.

Artificial Variations

Taking one step deeper into infinity, I trained a Stable Diffusion model on a collection of the fountain stills and asked it to imagine shapes. These are some of the machine’s infinite hallucinations.

A couple were passed through shaders for movement and extra depth.

Manipulated Variations

Fountains are already manipulated water. Here, the raw footage gets manipulated into a series of forms, and effects.

Naiadic Variations

The final step was abstraction. While attempting to recreate the fountain’s infinitude as a long-form generative art series, these naiads (water nymphs) appeared; dancing and decaying, for your pleasure.
